Robert Browning’s way to be one of the greatest poets
Robert Browning was an incredible English poet and playwright during the Victorian-era. He was born in Camberwell, London in May 1812. His parents were Robert Browning and Sarah Anna Browning. His father had a large library with about 6.000 books. Robert was intellectually gifted, and his father's library formed his education. His family supported him being a poet, and they also published his works. He was a master of the dramatic monologue, but also of the psychological imaginary. Today, Robert Browning is famous for his in 1868-69 published 12-book long poem The Ring and the Book which is a story series of a roman murder trial. During his most effective writing period, he started exchanging letters with his future wife Elizabeth Barrett Browning who was a poet too and who he married in 1846. Elizabeths’ father did not allow this marriage, that’s why they moved to Florence in Italy. Their son Robert Wiedemann (“Pen”) was born in 1849. While married, Robert Browning did not write much and used his time to educate their son Robert Browning, Jr. After Elizabeth died in 1861, Robert Browning and his son moved back to England. He died at age 77 in his son's house in Venice/Italy and was buried in the Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey/London.
During his life, he developed a unique style and implemented his personality. He is still one of the greatest poets of all times. In 1835 Robert Browning published his poem “Paracelsus” and in 1840 another one called “Sordello”. Even Charles Dickens praised him for his work “Paracelsus”. Later, some readers and critics said that his works are too dark minded. With his poem collection from 1855, Men and Women, he got more positive reactions and with publishing The Ring and the Book he was on his way to success. While living, Browning brought it to fame pretty fast, although his books never sold as good as his wife’s. In the 20th-century his fame, together with all the other Victorian writer, waned. His dramatic monologue was not favored anymore. But as long achievement and imagination are important human identities, Browning will be one of the most important poets of all
