But in reality he joined because he doesn't want to be alive anymore.

Francis is not considered a hero through his actions because he fails to help or save Nicole. As Larry LaSalle tells Francis to go home Nicole convinces him to stay. Nicole gets raped while Francis is in the shadows watching what was happening. A hero would come out of the shadows and help whoever is in need of help.
An Analysis of Francis Cassavant and Larry Lasalle’s Heroism and Anti- heroism By JN Tan When push comes to shove, a hero will rise from the crowd, and prove why he or she is deserving of the title. Heroes is a Young adult novel written by Robert Cormier. Set in the 1940s during the Second World War, it follows Francis as he seeks retribution for the events that happened in his dark past. The novel takes on the concept of heroism and anti- heroism, and also explores the grey area that lies between them. Both Larry and Francis are anti- heroes-
Larry was viewed as a hero by many people. On page 81, Cormier wrote, “Cheers filled the air, feet stomped the floor, almost drowning out the voice of the broadcaster: ‘A New England marine is one of the great heroes of Pacific action, receiving the Silver Star….’ and again cheers and applause rocked the theater, drowning out the rest of the commentary. That night and the following day, the people of Monument jammed the Plymouth to see the town’s first big war hero on the silver screen.” Larry was seen as a hero to the people of his town because he saved a whole platoon in the war.
Francis demonstrates he is not a hero through his words, thoughts, and actions, in the book, Heroes, by Robert Cormier. Francis is not a hero because in his actions, he fails to defend Nicole. Francis was just sitting in the dark, listening to everything happening. He acts like a domestic dog, his owner would be Larry LaSalle.with this in mind, Francis heard”... a whimpering like a small animal caught and trapped...” (Cormier 96).
Heroes are all around you but you just need to find them. In the novel The Outsiders Johnny is a hero. S.E. Hinton uses Johnny Cade's vulnerable personality and broken home life in The Outsiders to suggest that heroes do not have to be perfect.
Francis demonstrates he is not a hero through his words, thoughts, and actions,in the book heroes by Robert Cormier. Francis doesn’t defend Nnicole. They do good for others instead. Heroes help people and think about others before their own life.
The way we face difficult situations defines who we are as a person, sometimes these situations provide opportunities for us to be heros. According to Grant Wiggins’s definition of a hero, by the end of the novel he becomes a hero himself. He states, “A hero is someone who does something for other people. He does something that other men don’t and can't do. He is different from other men.
Francis the “Silver Star” hero Francis demonstrates he is not a hero through his words and actions in the book heroes by Robert Cormier. Francis is not a hero because he didn’t mean to save his comrades by jumping onto the grenade. He decides to join the army, but not to serve his country.
The novel ‘Heroes’ by Robert Cormier features a young war veteran, Francis Cassavant, who returns to his childhood home of Frenchtown from serving in the Second World War and has suffered severe deformities from a fall “on a grenade” which has led the readers to sympathise him and to believe that he is a “poor boy”. Francis has returned to Frenchtown with a specific purpose of killing Larry LaSalle, who is first portrayed as the glamorous and perfect man with a “smile that revealed dazzling movie-star teeth” and “a touch of Fred Astaire in his walk”. Through Larry’s character, Cormier is able to explore the various themes of the novel: masks, power, heroism, and guilt. Although Larry LaSalle is presented as a “hero” and a “champion”, there is an air of ambiguity about him that suggests that he is wearing a mask, exploring the theme of masks, as it contrasts with his “dazzling movie star” good looks and his “big hero” persona.
The narrator of the book is named Ponyboy Curtis, and he is a fourteen year old greaser who lives with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967. A hero is an individual who is selfless, and puts other people’s needs before their own. A hero is someone that stands up and fights for those who can’t. Someone can be defined as a hero, if he betters someone’s life, even in a small way. Three of the biggest heroes in the book, The Outsiders, are Darry Curtis, Cherry Valance, and Johnny Cade.
Francis Joseph Cassavant, an 18 year-old boy, is the main character in Heroes by Robert Cormier. However, Francis is not just any other ordinary 18 year-old boy. He enlisted in the army and fought for the United States during World War II. He lost most of his face when he fell on a grenade in France. The combination of Francis appearing to be suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the withdrawing from society makes him want to kill himself.
My face got blown off and I didn’t die…’” (Cormier 113). Francis’s actions saved his platoon, but he cannot actually be considered a hero because he was not trying to save them, he was only thinking of himself. His heroism is still being decided which brings him more
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
A hero is someone who helps others in a time of need, helps others out of genuineness, and sacrifices their life for others. In Albert Camus, The Plague, Joseph Grand is identified as a hero because he brings salvation to the society of Oran. Grand is a municipal clerk in Oran, and when the plague hits, is asked to help out with keeping count of people. Without questioning it, Grand begins and continues to help the citizens of Oran. Joseph Grand’s authenticity and heroism are manifested through relieving suffering, sacrifice, and devoting his life to work.
