Francis the “Silver Star” hero Francis demonstrates he is not a hero through his words and actions in the book heroes by Robert Cormier.
Francis is not a hero because he didn’t mean to save his comrades by jumping onto the grenade. He decides to join the army, but not to serve his country. He joined the army because he planned to commit suicide in honor and not to disgrace his family's name. Also thought jumping from a church is silly and dumb. So while on the grenade he expected to die but his planned backfired and a freak accident happened and now he scares little kids and hides his identity. Francis while on top of St. Jude Church said, “the ones who had taken their own lives and could not be buried in consecrated grounds” (Cormier 104). The fact that Francis …show more content…

So that night he was listening to every single noise he could possibly hear. He heard music, gasps, moans, and etc. Francis knew what was going on and didn’t even say stop, no sign of help from Francis. He knew what happened so he planned to kill Larry for what he did to Nicole. He found out where he stayed at and met him there, he he’s was gladly welcomed in his apartment. So they talked for a moment and Francis wanted to get to the point on why he truly is there. Francis pulled out his gun and started saying why he is pointing it at him, “‘I stayed behind that night’ ‘I heard what you did to her and still did nothing, I just let it happen’” (Cormier 113). That night, when he let it happen he saw her after torn apart, hurt, and betrayed that’s a feeling and sight Francis will never forget. He hated how he felt and it led to the thoughts of suicide. He wanted to talk it out with Nicole, but he found out that she went back to her dad’s home in Albany. He went to go find her and in result will never see each other again. Francis is not a hero because he couldn’t protect Nicole and lost her
