Lee was named after Ann’s favorite brothers, Robert and Edward. Ann raised Henry’s children from his first marriage and the six children that she had with Henry with Lee being the fifth (Bader, 2014). Lee’s father went to prison for gambling, and when he was released, Ann moved the family from Stratford to Alexandria, Virginia.

After General Lees’ army was left starving, and exhausted during the battle of Appomattox in Virginia, Lee surrendered to General Grant. This was important during the War because Grant was first Union general who had beaten Confederate leader Robert E. Lee.
