The great Robert Frost was and still is an important part of United States literature, especially in the poetry department. His wordplay and wit has forever changed the way people write poetry. Lots of writers, young and old, have been inspired by Robert Frost's way with words. Inspired by someone who worked hard and never gave up. Inspired by someone who left their mark on the world of poetry. Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco, California. Named after Civil War General Robert E. Lee (Biography), Frost lived in San Francisco until the age 12. At age 12 his father William Prescott died of tuberculosis (Robert Frost). This occurred even though both of his parents were school teachers in California (Richards). Frost's grandparents wanted the best for him so they decided that they wanted him to attend Lawrence High School which was better known for education, rather than attended a school in Salem, Massachusetts. To make this happen his grandparents paid train fare from Salem to Lawrence only if young Robert would do chores for them (Richards). So as long as Robert did his chores and was a good kid he was allowed to attend Lawrence High School. While at Lawrence High School, Frost found an interest in the subject of astronomy (American). He attended the University for several months before returning back home to Massachusetts so he could find work (Robert). Frost said that the other students at Dartmouth did not understand his desire to be a poet (Richards). After continuous failing jobs Frost decided to write his first poet as a professional called “My Butterfly: an Elegy” (Robert). The writing served well for Frost earning him and his new poem a spot in the New York newspaper, The Independent on November 8, 1894 (Poets). With the success of his first poem Robert Frost decided to make a bold move and propose to his girlfriend Elinor. She kindly rejected Robert explaining that she was going to finish her education at St. Lawrence University before getting married (Robert). Once Elinor received her diploma from St. Lawrence frost decided to propose yet again, and this time Elinor happily accepted his proposal (Robert).
