The Confused History of Robert Smalls A surplus of knowledge is found throughout a device that most people use throughout their daily routine. The smart phone or any other mobile devices use app to access the internet. The internet contain vast amounts of information and knowledge more than some libraries. However with all this information, not all the information gathered from these sources are true or factual. For example the website, Wikipedia, is able to be changed by multiple people to fit the idea of the general public. In the Wikipedia page, the original crew of The Planter decided to spend the night offshore while leaving Smalls and the other men were left on the ship. Later Smalls and the remaining crew surrendering the ship by heading straight to the Union and hosting and white bed sheet. When Smalls met with the Captain, he “asked for a United States flag to display.”(Wikipedia contributors) In a book, the original crew was ordered to be station offshore while leaving Smalls and rest of the crew to stay on board .Later Smalls and the remaining of the crew stole the ship and headed to the Union’s force. When passed the Confederate units, the ship “hoisted a dingy towel or handkerchief” (Miller 4). Later in the night, the ship was stopped by one of the Union’s ship. Another conversing piece of Robert Smalls’ life is who Robert Smalls’ father is. It known to believe that his mother is Lydia Polite/Small, but there is unknown factual evidences that states anything thing about Robert Smalls’ father. It is due to the fact, that Robert Smalls was an African American slave but some believe Smalls was also part white as seen in fig 1. One source states that Robert Smalls’ father is John McKee because the author believes that Robert Smalls is a white male (Miller 8; Encyclopedia of World Biography). At the same time, the author also believes that Robert Smalls could be a “very distinguished Jew” and could be the son of Moses Goldsmith, a wealthy merchant in Charleston (Miller 8).
