The Women’s Movement was a symbolic movement in achieving political and civil equality. It assisted women lifestyles in the United States, granting them equal opportunities as men. Therefore, the Equal Rights Amendment guaranteed equal rights with men and the Equal Pay Act guaranteed equal pay. But these opportunities rarely helped women since they were prohibited and discriminated from universities and communal school, young girls have to be taught at home by mothers due to the segregation from males and females. In the 1960s, organizations were predominantly constructed for women since they were driven away from society of men and can’t attend schools and colleges.
The advertisement was made to motivate women and make them feel powerful. The makers of the advertisement wanted women to see that they can do the same things that men can do. The ad was just the beginning of women’s imprint in the workplace. The same idea was used in the image of Nancy Pelosi. She because the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives after that position was filled by 60 other men previously.
In chapter 18, the author talked about how woman played a significant role in the progressive era. The biggest victory was the passage of the 19th amendment, enfranchising women and being the 27th country to allow women to vote. Women’s reform redefined the role of the federal government. Women worked to expand the scope of the federal government by overseeing issues such as wages, health working conditions, sanitation and social welfare. Eleanor Roosevelt was involved in the women’s movement when Franklin Roosevelt brought the women’s reform movement into the federal government for the first time.
How are those of the female gender supposed to act? In the 1930’s women were frill members of society and their only purpose was reproducing and doing domestic or menial jobs. However, in modern times, women are independent and have significant roles in society. Although society’s view of this subject has changed drastically for the better, some matters don’t change. Women in the 1930’s were considered naturally weaker than men, squeamish, and unable to perform work requiring muscular or intellectual exertion.
The 1960s brought along important and beneficial changes to America, especially changes regarding gender roles and race relations. Even after World War II and the increasing tensions between the United States and Russia and Vietnam, America’s culture was changing faster than before. During the 1960s, gender roles changed for the better and race relations improved significantly. The role of women in the 1960s changed after centuries of little to no freedom. However, women gained freedom during World War II and a sense of equality between the genders grew throughout the late 1900s.
Before many lived amongst this earth, the way of living was completely different than how it is today. Some feel as if the United States has become a better place to live over the past 45 years, and others feel as if things have fallen apart. In the 1970’s few laws have been passed to better both, society and association. In early 1970’s, Title IX, the Education Amendments Act has been signed. Back in the days, living for women was much more difficult than it was for men.
During the 1960s and 70s, many social and political groups acted on a reform for change. Many groups used numerous ways of protest in order to spread the word of their want for change during this time period. Two specific groups that especially achieved change were women and African Americans. Within these decades, both groups went from having little political and social equity to being almost equal. Both African Americans and women achieved political and social equity during this time frame due to the Civil Rights and Feminist movement, which allowed for the expansion of rights for both groups.
During the Progressive era there was a lot of public reform. Women were affected and they also created change thought their movements in this era. Women began working in factories and going to school. They began to have less children and wanted to focus on themselves. “Divorce rates increased because some educated women shunned marriage and believe only remaining single could they play roles they envisioned in the public world (Brinkley, Pg. 481).”
The progressive era which lasted from 1890-1920 in American society was the institution of radical reforms brought about by the millions of Americans involved in volunteer organizations across the country. During this time Americans worked to create solutions to the problems caused by the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country. The progressive era was not a single movement, but rather a collection of movements all of which were intended to improve the lives of Americans. This was a truly remarkable time for women and the end of the era would see almost universal women’s suffrage with the passing of the nineteenth amendment in 1920.
A historian by the name of Ed Ayers once said “The exploitative natures of women’s work throughout history has been enormous.” I believe that this statement is true because after looking at history it shows that there were so many things that they had to overcome to get to the rights that they have today. Women during the 1700’s and 1800’s were challenged with expressing themselves in a social system that refused to grant women the right to express their views. Many events during these centuries which included things such as social and political movements that increased attention to women's issues like education reform. By the end of the 1800’s women were finally able to speak out against the injustices aimed at them.
The 1960s were a time of great social confusion and change in America. The song lyrics of the times reflect this transition. While men appear to want to continue the dominant role in relationships, women seem conflicted as to what type of relationship they want from men. The lyrics in these songs are filled with statements that prove men wish to keep women in a subservient role.
The role of women in the United States has been determining since the country was still thirteen colonies. The role in the past defined women to do only their own domestications and household works, such as cleaning, finding some foods, taking care their children and farms, and sometimes their stores. They had no any rights in their property, including to be a head of household, even their husbands were gone or passed away. They also did not have any chances to be one part of politics, and they had no any political voices as much as men did in the society. After the colonies became the United States, however, these women took more active roles in the society by taking care their households instead of their husbands and being participated in
Over the past sixty years’ women have made their mark, some decades more drastic than others. Women’s roles in the household, the family life they dreamed of, their rights in society, and their values towards themselves have all made a huge impact and difference on the women then and now. The nineteen fifties had one of the largest impacts with the greatest music, styles, and breakthrough advertising techniques, the fifties have remained to leave a memorable impression on passing decades. The morals and styles of the fifties is known to have left the greatest inspiration on today’s modern culture. The modern two thousand with its drastic difference has re mastered the definition of modern living.
GENDER & ITS ROLE IN ADVERTISING Nowadays, in society, the role of male and female have changed dramatically, as opposed to the prominent roles in history. Today women are changing to break out of the mold that which our society has placed her in. This is cannot be when it comes to role representation in the different advertisements. Nowadays different organization from medium to large are spending millions of dollars on developing their marketing strategies. They spent countless hours to study their target audience to study them so that they can attract them a better way to their competitors.
I’m going to solely focus on how femininity is represented in contemporary advertising. Types of Stereotypes in the mass media Commonly in the mass media, such as movies, TV shows and advertising women are generally portrayed with certain stereotypes. Women are often stereotypically shown as playing dependent roles to men, lesser beings to men and as sexual objects. According to research carried out by Steve Craig, in commercial advertisements women can be portrayed in several different variants.
