The Roles Of Women In The Crucible Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible mainly to imply how our society would react to hysteria and the many consequences that eventually occur. Society as a whole had a pretty definite representation back then — the men were outside working hard hours while the women mainly scavenged and took care of the household while the men were gone. Naturally, many women were tired of this lifestyle and proceeded to have a bit of fun on their own; whether to make a change or occupy themselves throughout the day, women were able to do many things under no supervision. They have all just been caught in the woods the night before, and are now raising suspicion within Salem as mentioned before. The girls must now find a way to get out of this situation without punishment. As Abigal mentions… “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (Miller 20). As a result of all of the hysteria as well as Abigail’s intimidation, the girls now choose to make fake accusations as a result of their chaos across Salem once they are given the opportunity. “—I saw Sarah Good (Betty‘s hands appear above headboard raised toward the heaven.) with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil! (As she is speaking Betty picks it up as a chant.)” (Miller 48). All of these women are now sparking a huge debate throughout the entire town of Salem, resulting in many trials on many of the accused, resulting in a huge shift on who holds what authority. The girls are now focussing on getting rid of everyone that they abhor throughout the entirety of this brigade. Eventually, Danforth gets suspicious of the girls, resulting in Abigail sending threats to Danforth if their brigade is broken, claiming that she will accuse him as well. “Let you beware, Mr. Danforth. Think you to be so mighty that the power over Hell may not turn your wits?” (Miller 108).
