Sometimes problems force us to be courageous. In the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, Stacey Logan shows the most courageous problem solving throughout the story. During the novel, the Logans are a black family in a racist time period yet they own their own land which puts them in a position of power. Stacey is just one of the many Logans including his two younger brothers, Little Man and Chrsiptopher John, his daring little sister, Cassie, and his Big Ma, Mama and Papa. While reading the book, the reader may notice that the Logans are faced with many problems and Stacey, being the eldest child, often is looking out for the younger children learning more and more about leadership. It is often rainy and wet and the Logans have to jump up into the bank to keep themselves tucked away from the murky water splashes the bus produces. Every day the Logans come home drenched and dirty and for Little Man (who prefers to be clean) it is hard not knowing the true reason why. After quite a few interactions with the bus, Little Man gives up feeling hopeless and sad. Stacey has not given up though and forms a plan showing bravery and courage to solve the problem and stand up for his siblings against the Bus and Jefforson Davis school students. Stacey puts his plans into action and commands his siblings, “ Cassie, you start digging over there on that side of the road right across from me. That's right, don't get too near the edge. It's gotta look like it's been washed out. Christopher-John, you and Little Man start scooping out mud from the middle of the road. Quick now,”(Taylor 51). These commands from Stacey are revealing his leadership and ability to solve problems while understanding and thinking about the consequences that could come. Furthermore this line is important because it is proving that Stacey is using courageous problem solving for his siblings and himself and he is still putting his plan into action even if he could get into a lot of trouble. Mildred Taylor is providing an opportunity to get revenge for Stacey. Likewise, the reader can learn that loved ones can often be inspired by courageous people making courageous
