“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward” is a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK). The novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is about a black family that lived in Mississippi during the 1930’s who had to deal with racism, they were the Logan family. But the Logan family had several meters of land, that no other black people had land. Their land gives them courage and pride. Courage is having the quality of mind that allows somebody to face difficulties bravely or without fear.

For example, the mom tells her son, “Well, son, I’ll tell you: Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor- bare” relates to Mr. Morrison because life hasn’t been easy for Mr. Morrison. He’s had some tough times. But he comes through and help protect the Logans and himself form the wallaces. Another example in “Mother to Son” is when she says, “But all the time I'se’ been a-climbin on, and reachin’ landin’s and turnin’ corners, and sometimes goin’ in the dark where there ain’t been no light” relates to TJ because he has gone through some tough times such as getting beat up by the wallaces, getting blamed for Mr. Simms death and sent to jail and he has been reaching for help, still heading towards the light, yet struggling to reach those goals. Lastly, “So, boy, don’t you turn back . don’t you set down on those steps ‘cause you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now for I’se still goin’, honey, i’se still climbin’ and life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” relates to Big Ma because she inspires everybody, even though she has some tough times in life, there is no going back now, don’t give up, if you find it hard to keep going, just keep trying, even though life hasn’t been
