The Roman Republic was a great idea but poorly executed. The Republic was a idea by early Romans which help make a blueprint of democratic government. The Romans made Three branches of the government: Consuls, Senate, and the assembly. The Console branch was split in two people who served a one year term they were elected by the assembly. The Senate Branch there were 300 patricians and they served for life. They had lots of power and influence on the Republic. The last Branch of the Republic is the assembly they were the plebeians they were the common people and they have only a few powers like to veto laws and to vote for the console. One main reason why the social started is because Romans wouldn’t give the italians full Roman citizenship. The second reason is that the italians had a tribune Marcus Livius Drusus who was on their side and wanted the italian to have a Roman citizenship. (Tschen-Emmons, James B) The Senates didn’t like his ideas and didn’t want to give the italians Roman citizenships so they hired an assassin to kill him.(E. Badian). Those were the 2 reason why the social war began. After the assassin of Drusus they made their capital at Corfinium, which they renamed Italia and they created their own government with two consuls Poppaedius Silo and Papius Mutilus, a senate, and twelve praetors. Next they gathered 100,000 exprenced men to fight in the war. In 90 BC they put their troops in battle. In response they Romans put 150,000 men to fight. There was on battle in the north which was under control of Marius and there was battle in the south which was controlled by Sulla. Romans won the war. Lucius Julius Caesar set out a law the lex Julia 90, which gave full Roman citizenship to all the cities that didn’t revolted get their Roman citizenship. Sulla was a very successful general who became a consul after the social war. Marus he was also part of the civil war and he and he saw Sulla taking command against Mithridates VI of Pontus. Marus also wanted to be on command so he used the support of the tribune of the plebs Sulpicius and mob violence. When Marus got control of the army Sulla refused to accept his political defeat and give Marus command of the war against Mithridates VI of Pontus. Sulla fled to an army at Capua army to get them to support him with his Civil war with Marcus. Eventually Sulla got them to fight on his side so he led them to invade Rome. They took over Rome this was a big mark in Roman Republic's history in centuries that a Roman army had been led against the city.After Sulla won the war he made a reform that made it so no laws could be passed by the popular assembly unless it had already been discussed by the Senate, and that voting should be by the centuries, where the wealthiest had more power. He also wanted to reduce the power the tribunes, and added 300 new members the Senate. But the fight wasn’t over for the Republic there was one council (Lucius Cornelius Cinna) that was elected who wasn’t a ally of Sully. He broke Sulla oath and try to impeach Sulla, and found a tribune Virginius who was on his side and was ready to accuse him.
