In the beginning of the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell, there was a republic where everyone worked hard and everyone got their fair share. Also everyone voted on the leaders who happened to be the pigs, were fair and just. But as as history has shown us democracies and republics will always, eventually collapse. People can plainly see how that happens by studying ancient Rome and the Soviet Union. One of the reasons was because a powerful political leaders often got too much money, fame, glory and sometimes love from the people. All of those factors lead to the leader becoming power hungry and corrupt. When leaders get power hungry they can start to get greedy and not want to share power, money, fame, resources or anything like that. …show more content…

After Lenin, who was Stalin’s sort of mentor, died Stalin “methodically went about destroying all the old leaders of the Party” (PBS) and he first exiled them, then he realized they could still do him harm he either revealed them as an enemy to the people or just plain assassinate them like he did with Trotsky, who was killed by one of Stalin’s assassin's with a ice pick. Joseph Stalin then went on to create something now known as the Great Purge or the five-year plan where he killed and exiled millions of innocent people. He mainly focused on the wealthy peasants aka. the Kulaks where he deported or killed about five-million of them. His five-year plan also called for a 250% increase in the overall industrialization and also a 330% increase in in the heavy industry. Then he also made it so that all of the small independent farms were joined to make a few large collective farms (Collectivization and Industrialization). When Joseph Stalin went through with his Great Purge and Five-Year Plan he showed that he was the main cause and one can then translate that into the fact that power hungry and corrupt leaders are truly one of the sole causes of collapsing
