We were asked to translate Act 3 Scene 5 in Romeo and Juliet, into modern day English. Our group decided to modify Shakespeare’s words to give our peers a better understanding on what was happening in the scene. The scene begins when Romeo leaves Juliet to avoid being caught by the Capulet. After Romeo departs, Juliet is encountered by Lady Capulet, who tells Juliet that she must marry Paris. Juliet shocked by the news, refuses, which leads to a fight with her parents. Capulet enters, and after learning of Juliet’s disobedience angrily threatens to disown her, if she didn’t listen. Capulet storms out of the room, closely followed by Lady Capulet, who is unwilling to help Juliet. Juliet then desperately asks the nurse what to do. The nurse answers …show more content…

By the end of this scene, Juliet is very pissed off, because she feels everyone is against her, even the nurse. Earlier in my childhood, I had a similar situation in which I felt like I had been betrayed, and everyone was against me. I felt that it wasn’t fair, and I felt very isolated from my family, like Juliet by the end of this scene. In the scene, we can also notice an example of arranged marriage between Juliet and Paris. Juliet does not care for this arrangement and wishes to choose who to marry herself. In modern society, arranged marriage is still a serious issue. In other countries, such as India, arranged marriages still occur often. Arranged marriages were accepted during the shakespearian time, however it should not be allowed to continue. Arranged marriages is a violations of people 's rights and authority. Even though families might benefit from the arrangements, the parents shouldn’t decide for their kids. It is not morally right to make choices for others if they don’t allow it.
Our group translated and presented Shakespeare’s, Act 3 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet in a modern way, to give our peers a better understanding about the scene. Our presentation included the accurate information in the original scene, however, through a modern voice. In this scene, we can see Juliet becoming more mature and stronger as a character.
