Director Franco Zeffrilli is credited with creating the most accurate and unrivaled adaptation of the classic poem Romeo and Juliet originally written by William Shakespeare. This romantic tragedy was filmed in 1967 and published in 1968. The cast members that worked on this motion picture came together in order to redefine the romantic tragedy genre and create something brand new. Franco Zeffrillis take on this film included a level of realism not seen in prior versions; this could be the main reason for the amount of praise obtained throughout this film's lifetime. Romeo and Juliet won two academy awards for best costume design and best cinematography. The light and dark mise en scene used throughout all show why this film has earned these awards. The actors and actresses also earned multiple awards for their portrayal of these characters. Furthermore, the main plot idea is that Romeo (Leonard Whiting) and Juliet (Olivia Hussey) are falling in love. The main conflict that is prominent throughout the entire film is that their parents are rival enemies. As the film progresses we see how they try to overcome this conflict in order to see each other. A strong connection is shown between the two lovers as the viewers root for their love and for the conflict to be resolved. The mise en scene in this film helps create the environment of the time period. The variety of costumes used help bring the audience in and immerse them in the world Shakespeare created. A very important thing to notice throughout this film is the dialect used, the use of the specific words such as thou also help immerse the audience.
