R&J Final Essay Almost everyone is different in some way, but what about people who are different in almost every way? Mercutio and Romeo are best friends but are very different in almost every way. Mercutio is a good friend, he is optimistic, and he likes to have a laugh. Romeo on the other hand, is not invested in violence, is Impulsive, immature, and sensitive. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Mercutio and Romeo are foils in the play because of their difference in love language, their sense of humor, and their taste in a fight. One reason why Mercutio and Romeo are foils is their difference in tastes when it comes to taking a fight. Before Mercutio was going to fight Tybalt, Romeo un-successfully tries to diffuse the situation by saying, “Gentle Mercutio, put thy rapier up.’ Come, sir, your passado!” (Shakespeare 3.1.78-79) This quote clearly demonstrates Romeo and Mercutio’s fighting taste differences because of how Romeo tries to prevent the fight. Romeo’s humor is very lack-luster and Romeo himself is more sensitive, so he doesn't crack a lot of jokes, while Mercutio on the other hand loves to have a good laugh and makes a lot of jokes himself. Mercutio is a very optimistic man, but will definitely fight someone if it is anywhere near needed. Differently, Romeo is very against violence and tries to stop any fights that build up. Finally, Mercutio does not understand Romeo’s love for others, and how much he lets it affect him. Even though the two are so different, Romeo and Mercutio still manage to be best friends throughout the play. This shows that even though someone is different than you, you should still be nice to them because who knows, you might end up being good
