True Love vs. Physical Attraction in Romeo and Juliet and Modern Day In today’s society there is what can be called a “hookup culture”. A “hookup culture” is when individuals, usually being teenagers or males, are pulled into a certain person because of their physical attractiveness. This causes the individual to think of that person in a different way, and instead of wanting to get to know the person, this culture in the teen world today comes into play. In Romeo and Juliet, an original story by Shakespeare, Romeo is seen to be love-struck by Juliet, and this plays into the modern interpretation of being truly in love or just in love with someone’s physical appearance, like Romeo.

Many teenagers or even young adults go into bars or the mall just looking for someone they could mess around with. This goes to cause the conflict of true love versus a person’s physical attraction, and is the reason for this culture in the young world. Today, love isn’t seen as it used to be, and this plays into many “relationships”, “Well, I sure didn't expect it to happen, but we had a love affair the second time we were together… but I'm not sure I'm in love with her” (Van Buren). Furthermore, as previously mentioned, the idea of going into a public place, or being possibly placed next to someone in line for lunch can make someone interested in another’s looks, but not necessarily their love. The idea of getting to knwo someone isn’t as common in this “hookup culture” seen by everyone around the world in modern day. Today, teenagers go into these places looking for someone they could mingle with, “After the first day of school, I asked her, "How was school… "What was the best part?"
