Mentors are the people who help you through new and confusing situations. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare conveys the idea that the Nurse is a mentor to Juliet when she gives her advice on her relationship with Romeo and Paris. One way the Nurse portrays her role as Juliet’s mentor is when she aids Juliet throughout her relationship with Romeo. After the Capulets party when Juliet is desperate to know who she encountered, the nurse informs her that his name is “Romeo, and [he is] a Montague” (1.5.145). The name allows Juliet to find and meet up with Romeo again, which fuels their relationship. To further encourage their bond, Nurse helps Juliet meet up with Romeo. When she encounters Romeo and hears of his plan, she decides that she “will tell her as much” (2.4.160). Juliet was in love with Romeo, but her father was trying to force her to get married to Paris. When Juliet objects, her father says that she will “not house with [him]” if she does not wed Paris (3.5.198). When the Nurse hears of the news, she’s distraught. She decides that it is “best [she] married the County” (3.5.227). She reminds her that with this agreement she could “live here” since she has “no use of [Romeo]” (3.5.235). The Nurse is trying to prevent anything bad from happening. As Juliet’s mentor, she sees it as her job to make sure Juliet is happy and safe.
