Many people experience some sort of suffering throughout their lives. Moreover, this suffering can then affect them for the rest of their lives. The play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, explores the experience of human suffering through one of the main characters, Juliet. Throughout the play, Juliet suffers through destructive love, abuse of power in parental relationships, and the consequences of rebellion. Juliet experiences suffering through destructive love. Firstly, she suffers when she is separated from Romeo. Firstly, she suffers by doing things she doesn’t want to in order to avoid getting caught by other people. For example, she says, “What if it be a poison, which the friar / Subtly hath minister’d to have me dead...” (4.3.24-25) In this quotation, Juliet is about to take a potion Friar Laurence gave her to pretend that she is dead, in order to be with Romeo, however now she is having second thoughts and wondering if the Friar was intending to give her the potion to kill her. THis quotation shows how she is willing to rebel against her parents in order to be with Romeo, even though she is skeptical about drinking the potion. Juliet defies her parents and is never caught wiht Romeo, however she must suffer for this to happen, thus it being a consequence of rebellion. Secondly, she suffers through Romeo’s acts of rebellion and the consequences. In the play, she says, “I must hear from thee every day in the hour, / For in an hour there are many days.” (3.5.44-45) In this quotation, Juliet is pleading Romeo to contact her after he has been banished from Verona for killing her cousin, Tybalt. While Juliet herself has not committed any crime, this quotation shows how she must pay by not being able to be with Romeo.
