Romeo and Juliet are an awful example of true love. Star-crossed lovers don’t show any signs of true love. Romeo and Juliet don’t respect each other, can make rational decisions, and they don’t fully care for each other. Romeo and Juliet didn’t fully respect each other. If Romeo respected Juliet, Romeo would not have killed Juliet’s cousin Tybalt. In Act 3 Scene 1, Romeo gets in a duel with Tybalt. “Now, Tybalt, take the “villain” back again That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio’s soul is but a little way above our heads, staying for thine to keep him company. Either thou or I, or both, must go with him.”(3.1.135-138). After the dinner party, they decided to get married the next day when they had only one true conversation. In Act 2 Scene 2, Romeo and Juliet have their first real conversation, “If my heart’s dear love- well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee, it is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden, too like the lightning, which doth cease to be”(2.2.115-119). In this quote, Juliet said they were moving too fast, but Romeo eventually pressured her to marry just because he wanted her. This shows that they couldn’t have real, meaningful conversations without making irrational decisions. Another time the couple made an irrational decision was when they killed themselves because of the other. Immediately after Romeo found out Juliet was “dead”, he instantly went out and bought poison to commit suicide. In Act 5 Scene 1, Balthazar brings news of Juliet’s death, and Romeo goes to the apothecary and says, “Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight. Let’s see what that means. O mischief, thou art swift to enter unto the thoughts of desperate men.”(5.1.34-36). This means that he thinks he can’t live without Juliet, so as soon as he hears she’s dead, his brain goes straight to committing suicide.
