How would you feel if you and your lover's families did not get along and you were unable to be with your lover? The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a play about two young lovers who fall profoundly in love amid a savage family conflict. In this drama we see that these two lovers will do anything to be together. As a result, their love for eachother leads them to commit suicide. Because of this, their love for one another causes them to commit murder. For instance, Friar Laurence hurriedly wed Romeo and Juliet in the belief that their union would put an end to the rivalry between the Capulets and the Montagues. In Act 2, scene 3 Shakespeare writes, “ But come, young waver, come, go with me. In one respect I’ll thy assistant may so haily prove, "To turn your household’s rancor to pure love”(Act 2, scene 3, lines 83-92). What the author illustrates here is Friar Laurence's prediction that Romeo and Juliet's marriage will cause the hostility between the Capulets and the Montagues to change into love to make his point. This demonstrates that Friar Laurence is accountable for Romeo and Juliet's deaths since he married them while being aware of their families' animosity toward one another. Romeo and Juliet could not wed in public since the Capulets and Montagues were rival families and there would only be further animosity between them. For instance, when Juliet decided she did not want to wed Paris, she sought Friar Laurence for advice and assistance. He gave Juliet a vial to make her look dead. But Romeo was never informed of the plan which made Romeo believe that Juliet is actually dead and he commits suicide. In Act 4, scene 1.line 93-97 Shakespeare writes, “ Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilling liquor drink thou off. When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor, for no pulse Shall keep his native progress, but surcease”(Act 4. Scene 1. line 93-97). In other words, according to Friar Laurence, the potion will make her appear dead but really put her to sleep by making her veins flow cold and giving her a groggy demeanor. This proves that Juliet was given a potion to make her appear dead. Friar Laurence gave her the potion in the hopes that she would not have to marry Paris. This is why Friar Laurence is to blame for Romeo and Juliets death because of the vial he gave
