Overview Ronald Reagan was the 40th, and oldest, president of the United States. His age did not affect what or how much he accomplished, however. One of his most memorable quotes was,”I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience.” This showed the people that he could handle difficult situations. During his presidency, he accomplished many goals both domestically and internationally. Reagan cut taxes and spending and strengthened the military. Abroad, he fought communism, established America as a superpower, and did many other things, such as rescuing hostages. Failures Iran-Contra Scandal Throughout Reagan’s Presidency he had a good attitude and set the prosperous tone of the country, but slipped up at the Iran-Contra Scandal. He wanted to bring back “the great, confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism.” This positive attitude that America was heading in the right direction was contagious, and Americans everywhere felt the same way. They trusted him, and backed up most of his decisions. They wanted to live in a great country, and he promised that. When dealing with other individuals, he had a firm but gentle approach. The way he carried himself made him seem trustworthy. His life before his presidency as a lifeguard and actor gave him confidence that the people could see. They did not doubt his abilities. No matter how good he was before this, one event caused a big bump in his presidency. The Iran-Contra scandal shocked and upset many Americans. This was his biggest issue with morality.
