“The Glass Castle” is a biography, drama written by Destin Daniel Cretton; it portrays a young girl (Jeanette Walls) and her family as they struggle in poverty stricken towns with a mother who is an eccentric artist and her alcoholic father who she blindly puts her faith in. The film was released on August 11, 2017 and features Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts among others. The big question, “What do I think about “The Glass Castle” film? The film was dissatisfying overall, I did not feel same emotional attachment that I felt with the book. They did not show enough of Jeanette and Rex’s connection to each other.
Regret is an incurable disease caused by lies, distortion, and falsehood. People often try to find a cure for this disease or try to believe that regret is something that is easy to cure, however, it is not. Once an individual make themselves believe in a lie they tell themselves, the pain and suffering that comes with regret will continue to linger for a lifetime. Sinclair Ross’s short story, “The Painted Door” highlights the idea that individuals who deceive themselves in the chase for happiness often create a lifetime of regret.
When society thinks of the word “childhood,” they imagine it as a precious time for children to be in school and freely play, to grow and learn with the love and support from people dear to their hearts. It is also known to be a cherished period where children are to be innocent and live carefree from fear. Ryan at the beginning of the story was just a normal teenager, but at the end of the book he turned into a murderer.
Extended out to most children is the hand of a parent offering a warm hug along with warnings of danger to their children. This is what any fit parent would do. However this is not always the case with all parents. For example in the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary and Rex Walls are not fit to be parents because they don’t give their children what they need and have an unstable relationship. Jeannette and her siblings live off of what their parents can afford when they have sufficient money but they don’t use it to give them what they need.

With these works readers have the ability to face the facts and understandings of human nature around such an important time of mankind’s history.
Dreams, contrary to popular belief, are terrible. The best thing to do, is to stop chasing dreams because all dreams do is distract people from more important responsibilities. People spend their time chasing their dreams, but they don’t perform their day to day tasks they need to survive on their own. Instead of getting a job to provide for her poverty stricken family, she decides to stay home and paint all day.
In The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary is the mother of the Walls children who often does not act as a true adult. Rose Mary’s attitudes and behaviours are childlike, and therefore her children must take on responsibility for the lack her own. Rose Mary ignores her obligations as a parent and chooses an irresponsible way of life which endangers her children. Rose Mary has never properly matured into adulthood due to her lack of financial stability, bliss ignorance and optimism, and her selfishness nature.
Does an individual's role in self-perception play a role in seeking to reconcile the conflict between illusion and reality? In Jeannette Walls "The Glass Castle," Rex displays hidden trauma from when he was a child, which leads him to create a false reality to shield them. In doing this, the false reality will lead them to struggle to find the difference between what is real and what is an illusion. As an adult, Rex displays minimal remorse for anyone in his life when they are harassed. This is most prominently displayed after Rex's mother touches Brian, and when Rex gets back to hear about this, instead of taking his own son's side, he instead tells his kids "Brian's a man, he can take it".
Trauma’s Effect on Identity Life experiences such as trauma shape and reshape people into their individual identities. Things such as faith, mannerisms, and general world views are all affected by a unique human experience on earth. This development of an individual is unveiled in Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night. Through this novel, he details his experience in a concentration camp during WWII and thoroughly showcases how such agonizing life events affected him, which he usually describes through metaphorical light and dark and his development/loss of faith through this part of his life. In later speeches Eliezer makes, he explains his opinions on indifference in our world as worse than evil and some basic research of trauma responses in humans
The Novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne used different locations in a huge way. The story took place in Boston and the living style there is different than the other colonies. Also locations such as the church, prison, and the mansion played big parts. The story being in Boston had played a huge part. The author says, “ and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her townspeople and neighbors.
The setting shapes the mood and tone of a story and has a great affect on what happens in a story. The setting influences the events that take place, how the characters interact and even how they behave. Settings show where and how the character lives, what they do, and what they value. Characters have a relationship with the setting just as much as they do with other characters in the story. This is seen in the effects the setting has on the development of the Character Elisa in the story “The Chrysanthemums.”
When in the apartment the scenes show the struggles the family faces together. When these situations happen outside of the apartment is makes them seem more like individual journeys or hardships. That paragraph gave me key words like home,the front door slamming and lourie shouting isn’t anybody here.that makes me think that the setting was at home.
