The top three main characters are Tom Joad, Jim Casy, and Rose of Sharon. Tom Joad is the protagonist of the novel. He was once in jail for killing somebody but got out of jail on parole. He is the son of Tom Joad, and Ma Joad; the brother of Noah, Winfield, Al, Ruthie, and Rose of Sharon; the nephew of Uncle John; the grandson of Granma and Granpa and the brother in law to Connie. On the journey West he helps Al and the family by managing and driving the truck. He later kills a man after that man kills Jim Casy. Ruthie tells about the killing, and he must go away from the family and into hiding. Jim Casy used to be a preacher, and he tried to help the family with various religious matters along their travels. He takes the blame for harming …show more content…

For example, when referring to Rose of Sharon’s her baby Steinbeck writes, “Never breathed…, Never was alive” (603). This shows that Rose of Sharon had to deal with the sorrow of having her baby never even be alive and never being able to live life. Jim Casy is an example of a character facing difficult times of hardships, because Steinbeck states,” The flashlight beam dropped, searched and found Casy’s crushed head” ( 527). This shows that Casy faced never being able to fight back for what he believed in , and that Tom had to deal with the loss of a good friend. The structure of how the characters develop and how the action ordered are similar, because there is hope to begin with, but troublesome times are encountered later. For example, the men during this time were just living life rather normally until Steinbeck writes, “… the dust lifted up out of the fields and drove gray plumes into the air like sluggish smoke” (4).
