Rhetorical Analysis Imagine doing a crime in another country and being whipped for it. According to text,“ Michael Fay, an American teenager living in Singapore, was arrested in 1994 for possession of stolen street sign and for vandalism of automobiles( Background Information on Michael Fay Controversy pg.141).” He was sentenced to caning since he was not in the USA. “ Time to Assert American Values” published by New York Times is anti caning. “ Rough Justice” written by Alejandro Reyes is definitely pro caning. Ethos is mainly focusing on credibility while logos and pathos are different. “Rough Justice” thinks very differently from the other story because it think that crime will go down if they make the consequences more harder. This article uses ethos and logos because it uses credibility and uses facts and statistics to show results. According to the article it states “ Since 1988, government statistics show there has been a steady decline in the crime rate from 223 per 10,000(Rough Justice pg. 144).” Due to these statistics the argument was even proven by facts. This article is overall better and stronger because it uses two rhetorical devices that best fit it. For one it uses logos which means facts and statistics. Another it uses Ethos which mean credibility. “ Time to Assert American Values” also uses a lot pathos which can help persuade or use emotion. Although this article has a lot of strengths it also has a lot of disadvantages. It uses a lot of pathos but not to much of the other ones. If it used a equal portion of the other ones then it would have been better and it contains Ad Populum.
