Logos: This appeal targets the audience's rationality and reasoning abilities. It relies on reasoned arguments, facts, evidence, and logical explanations. Speakers using logos present their viewpoints as logical and well-supported, using deductive reasoning and syllogisms to demonstrate the validity of their claims.
Pathos: The appeal to pathos targets the audience's emotions. By evoking emotions such as pride, love, compassion, anger, shame, or fear, speakers establish a personal connection with the audience. This connection makes the issues more relatable and the arguments more compelling. Pathos can be evoked through vivid imagery, emotionally charged language, compelling storytelling, and the use of rhetorical devices like repetition and parallelism.
Ethos: Ethos appeals are based on the speaker's character and credibility. They aim to establish trust, competence, and goodwill with the audience. A persuasive speaker demonstrates expertise in the subject matter (competence), presents themselves as honest and reliable (moral character), and shows genuine concern for the audience's welfare. Ethos helps to build trust and make the audience more receptive to the speaker's
