The Father of Pop Art
“Pop art looks out into the world. It doesn’t look like a painting of something, it looks like the thing itself”(“Famous Quotes”). Roy Lichtenstein was a Pop Artist throughout the mid 1900’s. Bubble-gum wrappers, comic books, newspaper ads, and pages from the phone books were all part of Lichtenstein’s most famous paintings. Lichtenstein’s paintings were later recognized as true masterpieces and changed the world of pop art forever. Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 7, 1963. He grew up in a fairly wealthy family for his time and attended a private school for some parts of his education As a teenager, he took watercolor classes at Parsons School of Design to enhance his artistic abilities and at this time, was more interested in art than ever. In college, Lichtenstein studied with artist Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League in 1939. Lichtenstein studied art throughout college and became an art teacher after graduating. He used a comic book panel from an issue of DC comics’ All American Men of War as his soul inspiration. In this famous painting, Lichtenstein could present action packed scenes in a way that is not personal and left the viewer to decipher the meaning of the painting. “Everybody knows that abstract art can be art, and most people know that they might not like it, even if they understand there is another purpose to it”(“Famous Quotes”). This famous painting was purchased in 1966 and is now available for the public to view at Tate Modern Art Gallery, located in London. Another famous painting of Lichtenstein’s is Laughing Woman. In 1964, Lichtenstein created a large-scale mural with a woman’s face as the focal point for the New York State Pavilion during the world fair. Lichtenstein 's art works have a sky rocketed since then and are worth millions of dollars
