“Rules of the Game” is a story illustrated by Amy Tan. The story is about a young Chinese girl named Waverly who finds herself marching into the world of chess. It began at Christmas when her mother gave a chess game to her brother, Vincent. When her brothers Vincent and Winston began playing, Waverly felt the deep secrets each chess piece held and became instantly hooked. She began to learn more about chess so she could challenge other people. One day, Waverly was on her way home when she saw two old men in the park playing against each other. Amy Tan expressed Waverly’s excitement by rushing home and immediately challenging her brother. After getting better at chess, she decided it was time to challenge the old man in the park. She ended up losing but, the old man saw potential in her and chose to teach her the ways of chess …show more content…
Later, in the story, Waverley has gone through many opponents and ended up being in the cover of life magazine. Amy tan would explain how every day Waverley would come home and go up to her room. Waverley could skip her chores and left her brothers to do them, but the one thing that she had to stick to was go to the supermarket with her mother on Saturdays. Waverley's mother would brag about her winnings every time. Waverley believed that it wasn't necessary to be too prideful about it. Waverley would tell her mother that she shouldn’t have said anything at all. This brings up an argument between Waverley and her mother. Waverley ended up running away and fully realizing that she had nowhere else to go except back home. The story ended when Waverley came back home to crude faces and no dinner. She went to her room and imagined her mother as a hard and difficult opponent
