Mothers and Daughters In the first paragraph of Amy Tan’s short story “Rules of the Game,” the author introduces a six-year-old girl, who came from a Chinese heritage, growing up in America. Her mother raises her and teaches her how to act as a young Chinese girl. Waverly has always bit back her tongue when she disagrees with her mother and has ever since she was taught to do so (Tan). “Her relationship with her mother in the beginning of the story is good, but it deteriorates overtime as Waverly becomes more Americanized” (Galens 258). In “Rules of the Game,” the author, Amy Tan, shows a struggling relationship between a mother and daughter. As a child, Waverly’s mother teaches her many strategies for life. Waverly is taught silent power, and learns to respect her mother (Convintree). Waverly cried aloud when she didn’t get what she wanted her mother said, “Wise guy, he not go against wind. In Chinese we say, Come from South, blow with wind-poom!-North will follow. Strongest wind cannot be seen” (Tan).
