In the short story “ Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut the solemn, melancholy and nightmarish moods are expressed by the theme and figurative language, and it helps the reader understand better the story. Vonnegut used simile to describe when the buzzer went off in George's head(22). Also, when Harrison showed how easy it was to take off the handicaps showing that it was as fragile as tissue paper(25). People were impressed on how easy it was to take the handicap off. Vonnegut used hyperbole to describe events that were exaggerated.
Throughout the novel, the author Edward Bloor uses literary devices such as similes to make the readers visualize the descriptive situations in the story. These similes describe to the reader how different occurrences relate to other actions, objects, or living things.
She then gives credibility to her claim by saying that Wharton “ranks with the greatest writers in her creation of setting and atmosphere.” She then compares the colors of Ethan Frome to the white of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick to show that while the book lacks color, it also has small touches of color in important things/people in the book: in Mattie’s cheeks and the pickle dish. Comparing the two books with one another gives her statements about the colors and their meanings some credibility. White proceeds to argue the point of how the snowy setting makes the story fall together, and of how Ethan’s emotions mirror the landscape. Both points use logos to convince the audience of the validity of White’s point.

George takes care Lennie ,who is mentally disabled, throughout their adventure. Throughout the book, there is profound language, racism, and sexism found. These factors make people question if it is appropriate for high school students to read and analyze this book. Even though it includes these factors, Of Mice and Men should not be banned.
Similes and metaphors provide a better sense of Perry’s freshly accomplished strength in “Roar”. The similes span from comparing Perry to a butterfly and to thunder. Although these are total opposites, both are effective in showing the transformation in her self-confidence. One metaphor compares Perry to a tiger, while another metaphor compares her struggles to fire. These connections are essential to the audience’s better understanding of her feelings.
