Introduction or Rationale (Significance) of the lesson:
The lesson is about the Rwandan Genocide during 1994. We are teaching this lesson to inform our students of the event, as well as showing them that genocidal acts did not stop after the Holocaust. Students will use do research in order to learn about the event which will boost their research abilities as well as their personal knowledge of the genocide. The students need to understand that genocide happens all around the world and it affects countless people of different cultural backgrounds. By showing a movie, we are able to portray multiple aspects of the event in detail that shows emotions as well as the visual destruction. The movie is followed up with a research and creative assignment in order for them to take what they learned from the movie and expand upon it and seek answers elsewhere. The lesson fulfills the OAS High School World History Content Standard 5:6 by discussing mass murders that occurred in 1994 in Rwanda. The lesson also fulfills the OAS High School World History Process and Literacy Skills A:2:a, B:4, and B:6 by having students organize the information that gathered from online sources in an organized and creative manner that conveys what they learned through their research.
