The U.S. and Soviet Space Program: A Comparison is a book by David E. Newton. This was published in the year 1988 by Franklin Watts. This nonfiction book has 141 pages. My book is mainly comparing the Soviet space program with the United States space program. Many people know this feud between the U.S. and USSR as the "Space Race."

This book is comparing the space programs of the U.S. and Soviet Union. Both of these superpower nations had equal superpower space programs. They had two of the only space programs that were known to exist at this time. Starting in 1957, the Space Race began. The USSR got a head start, capturing more materials from Germany than the United States. They immediately launched into action, building spacecraft and learning in the process. In turn, they were the first to send a man-made object into space. This Russian satellite was named Sputnik 1. After the United States got word of the Russian success, many Americans criticized the U.S. government for losing focus on their Space Program as well as military and education. They then stepped up and put more financing into the Space Program. The U.S. believed that the Soviet's success was due to their form of government. Throughout the race, the Soviet Union kept rather quiet and didn’t publish much of what they were doing. Later on after the Sputnik launches, the U.S. finally got their first spacecraft into space named Explorer 1.
