The Cold War was a war between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In this 45 year period, there were no real battles. Ultimately, the US is to blame for the cold war because because of it’s initiating the arms race and continuing to engage in what the USSR did, instead of being neutral and ignoring the actions of the country, although thit USSR wanted to take over the entire world and also started the space race.
The United States started the arms race, which was the commencement of the cold war. In Kimberly N. Kutz’s speech on the arms race, she describes the race by saying “... both the United States and the Soviet Union vied to build evermore powerful nuclear weapons.” The arms race began because the United States alarmed the USSR and led them into creating a powerful, more advanced weapon. According to the space race timeline, “The Soviet Union launched the Sputnik 1 into earth orbit” on October 4th, 1957. With the USSR putting a satellite in earth’s orbit, the U.S. is presented with no choice but to build a satellite as well, because they could not take the Soviet Union’s satellite out of space without the United States having one of their own. As illustrated in the space race timeline, “Explorer 1 the first American satellite, enters orbit around earth” on January 31st, 1958. After the U.S. launched their own satellite, the race to put a man on the moon officially began. As noted in the space race timeline, “Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon” on July 20th, 1969.
