Safe Space Safe Space is a term used to describe an area, normally in an academic situation, that an individual is free to express themselves without fear of rebuttal or discrimination. The concept of these areas began with places like gay bars and consciousness raising groups. These places or groups gave certain individuals an area to express themselves during a time when their beliefs or ideas received discrimination. Now these areas have regain popularity in Colleges all over the U.S and European countries like England and France. Safe Spaces are now something that offer students and faculty a place to withdraw themselves from any form of academic discussion and ideas. The first is about an experience with a group of black students sitting in a cafeteria that are asked by a few white students if they maybe able to sit with them. Now this isn 't to be taken as if a particular group can not be of a single race because that might offend people or that those individuals did not have the right to reject someone from joining in. Instead of just accepting the fact that these particular individuals choose to behave and arrange themselves as they did in free will Mr. Schapiro uses this as a justification of safe spaces. Schapiro then moves on to the next example he uses to justify safe spaces. This story is about a recent white Jewish graduate who was able to spend her free time in a stress free environment at the Hillel house a Jewish organization. He tries to liken this establishment and the Catholic Center to the safe spaces in question and how those establishments are never questioned but safe spaces are. That would of course be because religious institution instead of shutting out individuals that do not agree with them welcome them into a open environment where they might discuss and exchange ideas with those individuals.
