Safety On Campus Shootings

Safety is something we all strive for in our lives and we need it as much as we need air. Sadly, recent events in the world have put this safety at risk, something that must be changed. Being a university student, safety at the campus I commune to daily is of the upmost importance. The violence on school campuses has gotten worse as the time goes on, a total of 19 shootings has happened in 2015 alone. This may not seem like a lot, but the 40 deaths in these shootings respectively say different. This number alone is too high – things have to change. The fear that media has instilled in us has become commonplace, something we don’t really question. Despite the crime rate being at an all-time low, there are still incidents that are forefront on our mind. This is especially true for myself, who looks at the numerous campus shootings and questions if that could happen to me. Is my campus safe enough? While only working at the university for five months, his experience in law enforcement goes beyond that. When asked his opinions on the shootings in schools, he said, “Completely unnecessary. Why would one want to shoot the innocent? Why take a life away for any reason?” I also asked him about the procedures in place to prevent such violence, to which he said, “Well, you never can tell what will happen, but we have preventative measures in place. We do patrols both inside the campus and outside, as well as cameras on every corner of the building. We can’t predict what will happen, but we can try and stop it.” His answers made me feel safer to be on campus, however I still feel as though there is more that schools can do when it comes to these violent acts. Only time will tell, and as the shootings grow in numbers, I can only hope something will be done
