GodBeer starts readers off with the setting taking place in Daniel and Abigail Wescots household. He tells of a dilemma going on in the household pertaining to their servant; Katherine Branch. She was experiencing hallucinated fits that caused her to convulse and scream in pain.
Although there were many possible causes for the Salem witch trial hysteria of 1692, social division and drama were the most significant. Interestingly, historians have found out about the differences that were present between the accused and the accusers of the witches that fueled the witch hunt. Accordingly, the eastern side of Salem was more powerful and wealthier than the western side of town, which consisted of most accusers who charged people on the east (Doc E). As it is possible to see, there was a division, or crack, in the community, and the western half became jealous or disliked the others in the other half.

During the summer of 1692, Salem Village proved to a wretched example of this; twenty people were falsely accused of witchcraft and were accordingly jailed and executed. Clearly, there were a few possible causes of the hysteria; however, envious, young, single women; sexism; and lying little girls stand out as the main causes.
Through history, many people were accused of crimes and sins that they did not commit. All the way back to the 1600’s, in Salem Massachusetts, 20 innocent civilians were killed for the false accusations of witchcraft. Although there was no evidence of any actual witches and it was all pure speculation, they were still labeled as guilty. Even when the accusers had figured out that they were actually innocent, they ultimately decided to execute them anyways to save their reputation. False accusations still happen to this day as in 2001, from Kansas city, Missouri, inmate Joseph Amrine was incarcerated for burglary and robbery and while in prison, he was sentenced to death for a crime that he did not commit.

Is it OK to kill people based solely on accusations? Kill innocent children? Burn women at the stake? Believe it or not, all of these atrocities and many more occurred in the town of Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600’s, and it was all done in the name of religion. Over 150 men and women were accused of witchcraft and sentenced to the death penalty based on accusations with no legitimate evidence proving them guilty.
In Salem, Massachusetts, Puritans were strong believers in the Bible. The Bible states, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” The Puritans beliefs led to them accusing 20 innocent people of being a witch, this resulted in their deaths in 1692. Even though the Puritans couldn’t see it at the time, their accusations were really based off jealousy, lies, and Salem being divided into two parts. In 1692, A town in Massachusetts by the name of Salem Village found itself in one most documented cases of mass hysteria in history. This saga started with three girls: Abigail Williams, Elizabeth Parris, and Ann Putnam a neighborhood friend. Abigail Williams, the niece of the town’s minister, began to display weird and questionable behavior. The town’s physician,William Greggs, was called to determine the cause of this sporadic behavior. The town’s physician determined that the three girls were under “the Devil’s influence” and they had been bewitched.

Nearly anyone from the New England has heard of the famous Salem Witch Trials. A year of persecution, leading to the accusation of nearly 200 citizens of all ages. No one was safe; men, women, children, even pets stood trial and 20 were hung for the supposed crime of witchcraft (Blumberg). 1692 was a year of witch hunting. Most today blame the trials on hysteria, or perhaps a bad case of paranoia.
