The play “The Crucible”, written by Arthur Miller, is about the Salem Witch Trials. These witch trials took place in Salem Massachusetts in the colonial time period of 1692. During the time of these trials, people in Salem, were accused of signing their name in the Devils book, and many of them were innocent yet found guilty and sentenced to death. At this time, many reputations were being destroyed by the rumors of witchcraft that went around. Three characters in this play, John Proctor, Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams, were striving to keep their name and reputations during these accusatory times. He is described to be strong even tempered man, who can sense a fool in his presence as sateted by, Miller.. One day, Proctor comes home late and questioned him about where he was Elizabeth, suspected Proctor of having an affair with their former servant, and now accuser, Abigail. She suspected him of going to Salem, to be with Abigail and he denies it by stating “ woman I will not have this suspicion any more” (Miller 51). John was tired that his own wife didn’t trust him anymore, and kept questioning his every move. With all the rumors about Abigail and the devil, the Proctors get caught up into the web of accusatory rumors . Elizabeth was accused of doing witchcraft and was sentenced to go to jail. During the trial, Proctor confesses the affair he had with Abigail “I have known her sir. I have known her” (Miller 102). he confessed shamefully to the court so he can save his wife and his reputation. In the end, to save his wife and good name he signs, John signs his name to a confession stating that he signed his name in the devil’s book.
