The chamber is about a man named Sam Cayhall being tried for murder. He was responsible for the murders of 2 young boys when he bombed their father’s law office. Sam was tried previously and both times the jury couldn’t get a conviction, and now after years, he is being tried for the 3rd time. The 3rd time he is in court, the jury is not all white, and during this time racism was a strong belief, so he was found guilty, and convicted. He was sentenced to death. After years of sitting on death row, a young lawyer named Adam Cayhall, which happens to be Sam’s grandson is representing him and has limited time with Sam’s execution date approaching. In Sam’s case he is sentenced to death. Sentencing years vary on the state but in Texas manslaughter can mean imprisonment for 12 years or more. Manslaughter means that the defendant had no intent to kill. 1st degree murder can mean death or 25 or more years in prison. 1st degree murder means that the defendant planned to do it, and carried the plan out. 2nd degree murder can be 15 years to life. 2nd degree murder means that the defendant had the intent to kill someone but it wasn’t planned beforehand. And Capital murder is death, or life without parole. Capital murder can be defined as a 1st degree murder but the defendant committed it more harshly, for a payment, or against law enforcement. Sam Cayhall is convicted of 2 counts of 1st degree murder and sentenced to death in a gas chamber. His lawyers continually try and prove him not guilty of the murders but as the years go by, Sam begins to realize something. He know he did wrong, and the guilt of what he did finally begins to catch up with him. Finally by the end of the book, he decided that he deserved what was coming for killing the 2 young boys, and he decides to die in the gas chamber at peace. What Sam realized is what may be morally right or wrong is not always legally right or wrong. In any type of law enforcement job, most likely you will see murders, people badly injured, and sometimes irrelevant things that can be resolved on their own. In criminal justice you will definitely see many court cases, and you may even be assigned jury duty, therefore you need to be able to understand the court system. Lastly, what may seem morally right to you is not always legally right. For example if someone you know got away with murder and you think they deserve to be dead as well then it may seem right to you to kill them out of anger, but to the law they wouldn’t care. The law would just see you as a murder and criminal. Sam Cayhall decided he wanted to bomb a law office of a man he didn’t like, but instead he ended up killing the man’s 2 kids. At the time, he thought it was right morally, but in reality it was legally and morally wrong. The court system won’t always have the same convictions, and sometimes it takes several trials to come to a conclusion. Sam had to be put through the court process not once, but 3 times, and each time the jury was different, and in different states and cities, and each time the result came out differently.
