Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver, is filled with many heart wrenching and thought-provoking scenarios and decisions. There are numerous reasons as to why Jonas, the main character, made the difficult decision to leave his ‘’community’’. In the dystopian world Lois Lowry creates, society is ruled over by Sameness. Sameness makes people unopinionated and sheepish, unable to be individuals and overall, numb. It stripped any form of beauty, and beridded of the wonders of life. Jonas made an impulsive decision that endangered himself and many others, though ultimately, it was the just thing to do.

In Jonas’ community sameness is king. It leaves the citizens unable to do things we consider rights. You cannot choose your own career, romantic partner or even what clothes you wear. You’re unable to make your own decisions and must be complicit with the ones placed upon you. Opinions and beliefs are obsolete, leaving the citizens to act more like sheep than humans. In addition to this, the people are so ill informed of absolutely everything. They cannot tell what they’re missing because they have no knowledge of it. Everybody in the same age group has the same haircut and clothing. Leaving differences in appearance to be merely a signifier of age. In addition to this, ‘’family units’’ all live in the same cookie cut house. The foods people eat are the same, only differing in amounts for precision. In a world where everyone is the same, and geneticists focus on making people even more similar, I can see why Jonas made the difficult decision to
