Still, in spite of the fact that Samsa is so keen on achieving his aim, he is surprised by a sudden unexplainable change in his body that prevents him from leaving his bed at all. When he wakes up, Samsa finds that he is unable to lift himself up from bed because he has been transformed into a large beetle: At first, Samsa thought that he was hallucinating because he was sick, and that what has happened to him was merely a delusion or a nightmare. Therefore, he thought about going back to sleep “for a few minutes and forgetting all this nonsense” (3), but these were no mere delusions because he is positive now that “it was no dream…he must have tried it a hundred times, closing his eyes so as not to have to see his squirming legs”
