Would you be a knight or a samurai? In the background essay it talked about how feudalism came to Europe and japan, what feudalism is, and explained Samurais and Knights. Feudalism came to japan and Europe by not having a central government, having constant warfare, and empires falling. The essay said feudalism is political, social, and economic. Samurais and Knights are warriors who owe loyalty and military to lords or damiyos. Therefore, the similarities between the Samurais and Knights were not greater than the differences. This can be shown by looking at three areas : training, armor, and beliefs on death. The first area of important differences was training. According to PBS series “The young warriors studied kendo(the art of fencing with bamboo sticks). About age 14 the trainee officially became a samurai in a ceremony called genpuku.”Also, PBS series wrote “by age 14 pages were eligible to become a squire.”The samurais become a samurai at a younger age. Knights, They have to wait until 21. One studied kendo, zen buddhism, confucianism, and bushido. The other started as pages, learned to ride horses and run errands then became squire at 19, Knight at 21. as long as knights to become a samurai.This shows the differences are greater between samurais and knights because the samurais …show more content…

Terry Bennett claims the japanese armor were “Small iron scales were tied together, lacquered and then bound into armor plates with silk or leather cords. The helmet bowl was made of 8 to 12 iron plates and below it was a 5-piece neck armor.” The Art Resource says the Knights armor were “complete suits of armor and constructed from metal. Also wore helmets, gloves, and shoes of steel.” The japanese wore less but still protective armor while the Europeans wore full suits.
