I. Summary
The San Antonio International Airport is considered to have noise issues. Property owners around the San Antonio airport have recently complained to city officials about the noise level surrounding the airport. In 2005, the San Antonio city started a program that would help reduce the noise levels around the international airport. Aviation officials said that the San Antonio government has assisted 1,400 homes, and have spent nearly $83 million dollars on the fight for noise reduction. As the city of San Antonio continues to grow tremendously, so does its passenger air traffic. The EPA has concluded that anything over 75 dB can cause some type of hearing loss. For this reason, the San Antonio government, with help from the federal government, has installed noise reduction insulation in over 1,000 homes around the San Antonio airport. This effort, which has cost nearly $44 million dollars, is the easiest way to help combatant the noise problem. Needs Improvement. While the city has fought noise reduction in resident’s homes, people are still exposed outside. Parks, and playgrounds surrounding the airport are at high risk for noise exposure.
Issue 3. The final issue that effects the San Antonio airport is noise levels are causing harm to wildlife surrounding the airport. High noise levels can cause hearing damage, and lower the survival rate. While residential streets surround the airport, wildlife such as birds still exist in and around the San Antonio airport.
Positive Actions. The FAA has implemented wildlife management programs to help reduce the number of wildlife around airports. By reducing the number of wildlife, the effects of high noise exposure will not exist. Needs Improvement. While having no wildlife around the San Antonio airport is near impossible, passenger aircraft still encounter these animals daily. Bird migration is always occurring, and needs to be better understood to help both the wildlife, and the aircraft.
