This rare bird, called a Swainson warbler, has recently found a surprising new home! With most of its natural habitat gone, thickets of giant sugarcane known as canebrakes, these songbirds having been on the brink of extinction. But now, they're thriving in the industrial loblolly pine plantations of the southeastern United States. Now these farms have become the main breeding habitat for the Swainson warblers. This is great news for scientists, since Swainson warblers are a species of high concern. On a pine plantation, trees are grown, harvested, and regrown every 25-35 years, so there are always trees that are at the just right for the Swainson warblers.
