Wong’s approach is he divided results into six groups following the National Center for Health Statistics’ urban-rural classification, running from large central metro counties to noncore, rural counties. The reason why he used this criterion is that this enables him to control the difference among different counties, so that it reduces the chance of confounding variables. The sample size in each group is listed below: sanctuary large central metropolitan area: 27; nonsanctuary large central metropolitan area: 35; Sanctuary large fringe metropolitan area: 76, nonsanctuary large fringe metropolitan area 238; sanctuary medium metropolitan area: 74; nonsanctuary medium metropolitan area: 251; sanctuary small metropolitan area: 76; nonsanctuary small metropolitan area: 217; sanctuary micropolitan area: 125; nonsanctuary micropolitan area: 403; sanctuary noncore area: 230; nonsanctuary noncore area: 740. Therefore, the total sample size is 2492. Wong utilized coarsened exact matching, or CEM to increase rigor to the analyses. CEM can improve causal inference by statistically matches counties sanctuary counties to comparable unsancuary ones, which controls for differences in population, the foreign-born percentage of the population, and the percentage of the population that is Latino. However, correlation may not be causation because there may still be confounding variables to cause both independent and dependent variables. In this research, it is possible that because the median income in sanctuary counties is higher than in nonsanctuary counties, the crime rate is lower because people are much more educated so that their higher education cause both crime rate low and median income high. In a high-income community, it has better resource to keep residents safe so it can cause crime rate low, which can be a reverse
