After being betrayed and caught the day he and his friends were planning to escape and later successfully escaping to the North, he is assaulted by a barrage of unexpected emotions considering he has just accomplished his life dream. Slavery: what a disgrace. Although slavery is still practiced in numerous countries, America has successfully abolished slavery. However, it did not happen quickly and in fact took centuries to end. It took the willpower of several individuals to reach this standpoint. One of which is Benjamin Banneker, son of former slaves, who writes an extensive letter to Thomas Jefferson for the purpose of abolishing slavery.
Rhetorical Analysis on “Southern Discomfort” In “Southern Discomfort” George Packer initially constructs a foundation on which he can build his coming argument by mentioning a recent vote in Congress in which southern republicans dissented from the rest of the party by making up half of the “no” votes. Packer then goes on recall the history of the South, touch on some major political issues and controversies, and just generally establish himself as a credible and knowledgeable individual on the South. Throughout the article, Packer makes numerous implications that both the South as well as its culture is out-of-date; a sort of antiquated representation of America from 1970 to 2008, one filled with the cliché southerner who only loves country, guns, and football.

Benjamin Banneker is the son of former slaves who has made strides in many fields. After perusing many professions, he wrote about his feelings of slavery to Thomas Jefferson, serving as the Secretary of State to President George Washington. Throughout his letter, Benjamin Banneker utilizes rhetorical devices to argue against slavery. Banneker utilizes criticism, such as when he cites the Declaration of Independence and compares it to how the rightful liberties of African Americans have been stolen. In addition, Banneker shows his true feelings by utilizing diction, which shows that Banneker is very emotional and serious.

He would like the reader to know about the unfair treatment of these individuals and the injustices that they regularly face. Since the age of Thomas Moore, intellectuals have been fascinated by the idea of an ideal society where all is well and total happiness is readily available to all of its members. Such ideals of a ‘utopia’ continued throughout the centuries until it reached a major pivoting point in the nineteenth century. Historical events such as the Second World War, the Cold War, the emergence of McCarthyism, and the creation of a nuclear bomb left people with a heavily misanthropic view of the world. Did you know that Martinsburg switched from a countryside town to a bustling city in less than a century? In the story, McJobs, by Eric Schlosser, Eric verbalizes about how life in Martinsburg transmuted greatly over time. Martinsburg is a city in West Virginia that is now known as “the fastest growing city”. It used to be a town by the countryside and is now a boisterous city. The underlying messages about life in Martinsburg that Schlosser seems to be alluding at are that the opening of fast food restaurants in Martinsburg led to less stable jobs, overpopulation made it more city like, and it was overworking teenagers.

Author Fredrick Douglass, wrote “Learning to Read and Write”, published in 1845. Throughout the article, he takes us through different events he goes through while being enslaved. Douglass begins building his credibility with personal facts and successfully demonstrating logic and pathos appeal.
J.D. Salinger, in his novel The Catcher in the Rye, uses a variety of word and expressions to show the tone. The Tone in the novel is demonstrated as bitter and very cynical. First, the reader is introduced to holden. They see his actions and get a peek into his thinking. His character is quite harsh, he trust no one and he believes everyone but himself is a phony.
Although he wrote the novel in the 1880s, Mark Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, still remains a controversy today because of Twain’s use of the “N-word.” Why does Twain use the word “nigger” over 100 times in his novel? What impact is he trying to create by using this derogatory term? Although a multitude number of schools banned Twain’s novel because of the use of the derogatory “term,” Mark Twain’s utilization of the “n-word” satirizes the white American society in the 1880s by reminding his readers that racism was considered a social norm and illustrates how much society attained in terms of racism and discrimination from when slavery was prominent. Furthermore, Twain utilizes the “n-word” because it is his work of literature and changing his words deprives the reader of its purpose and is considered to be a form of censorship.
In the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger readers are introduced to a young man named Holden Caulfield who introduces himself and begins to tell his story of how and why he left his school; Pencey Prep. In the story, Holden explains how he is being kicked out of school and doesn't want his parents to know and so leaves school early. throughout the story, Holden explains what happens to him before he must go home and act like he is home from school for a break instead of being kicked out. When it comes to the topic of Author's purpose of The will of individual vs the will of the majority some will think the purpose is to show that Holden going against the will of society to rebel, however, I think the author’s purpose of The Catcher in the Rye was to show that the individual will manifest in his desire for isolation comes from his is fear and damage done by fear of pain, failure, rejection, and is unwilling or unable to go along with the majority. This all shown through Imagery, symbolism, and diction.
