Sanger Rainsford was a very smart, successful man. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Rainsford had outsmarted General Zaroff many times but only three are: making different paths to confuse Zaroff, hiding in the tree from Zaroff when he was hunting him, and hiding in Zaroff’s bedroom curtains to kill him when he came into his room. Rainsford said to himself “I’ll give him a trail to follow” (Richard Connell) page 24, so he made many different loops and paths for him to follow. He made it confusing for Zaroff and he seemed to fall for it. Zaroff then walked past Rainsford and stopped then to turn around. When Zaroff walked past Rainsford, he was in a tree. Right after Rainsford made the loops and paths he found a tree, made a leap so he wouldn’t lead Zaroff up it and climbed up in it to hide from Zaroff. After getting into the tree he extended out to rest, which “brought him new confidence and almost a feeling of security”. (Connell, Richard) page 25. When he woke up, he woke up to Zaroff coming. Zaroff then suddenly stopped, looked up almost to Rainsford but didn’t see him laying in the tree. He also hid from Zaroff again in the curtains of his bedroom. …show more content…

He then wondered what to do from there and decided to jump into the sea and swim along the shore to Zaroff’s house. He had been swimming away from the hounds and soon made it to Zaroff’s bedroom to hide and waiting for him to arrive. Zaroff then finished eating and came upstairs. He went to the window then found Rainsford in the curtains and he was shocked to see him there. Zaroff then congratulated Rainsford and “Zaroff said with a deep bow, One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed.”(Connell, Richard) page 28. Rainsford then killed Zaroff and decided it was the best bed he had ever slept
