Sarah Forsyth was tragically exposed to sexual abuse by a trusted family member and many safe foster homes. In Sarah’s case we don 't know if her mother was part of Sarah’s life, therefore one absent thing in Sarah’s life was having a family member or a person to trust. If Sarah had someone she could consult with and explain the abuse she was facing at home, the abuse might have stopped sooner. Sarah was also abused in many of the foster homes she was placed. This demonstrates that the foster system was and may still be infiltrated with sexual predators. The structure of the foster home systems should most definitely change, such as having social workers visit the foster homes and meet with the child(ren) on daily bases. Pedophilia should be considered a mental disorder because just like a mental disorder, pedophilia affects a person 's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. A mental illness is influenced by distress, similarly to as what Professor DeRuiter stated in the film; that pedophiles build so much stress and that it causes them to act on their urges. There should be treatments that can help lower distress, such as interventions and/or support groups. The book Family Violence Across the Lifespans states that some researchers concluded that pedophilia may be caused by neurobiological factors (231), so medical treatments should be made more accessible to people seeking help as well as medical confidentiality protecting the individual 's identity unless the individual confesses to a crime.
