The beast is a hunter. Only— shut up! The next thing is that we couldn’t kill it.
Lastly the beast becomes savagery. In document E, Golding writes “maybe there is a beast… What I mean is… maybe it's only us.” Simon says this towards the beginning of Lord of the Flies when they first talk about what the beast is. Simon says that there isn't really a beast but only it is themselves.
Grendel the “Monster” Do not underestimate the power of a human being. Monsters are everywhere near and far. The sources that will be discussed are Beowulf (2007) film, Printed Cantos and textbook, and the Grendel Excerpt by John Gardner. The portrayal of Grendel in the movie differs greatly from the cantos and excerpt because in the readings he comes off as such a greedy monster, but in the movie he is lonely and in need of help.
In the world, minorities are often stereotyped and profiled unfairly. The novel “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers, portrays this by showing how quick people are to judge a young black male. In the book, Steve Harmon, a black sixteen-year-old, is on trial for supposedly participating in the robbery that resulted in the murder of store owner, Mr Nesbitt. Steve is arrested and detained in absolute isolation while having to undergo everyone’s, including his parents’ harsh critiques. Despite being found not guilty, Steve continued to be profiled as a monster and will never be treated as a teenager anymore.
The monster in the book Frankstein did not receive justice in anyway, for multiple reasons. Some of the reasons I believe in the novel, the monster did not receive justice because, he was brought into this world without knowing and without having an idea of what is going on. The first sort of injustice that the monster received was being brought into the world without having someone able to direct and educate him. If the monster would have had victor there with him from the start the monster have not been as crazy and murderous as he is in the book.
Perceptions from others can be cruel. Criminals are often thought of negatively by themselves and are also disrespected by others in society. The novel Monster presents the impressions people have about Steve Harmon, an accused criminal on trial for robbery and murder. Furthermore, the text explains Steve’s views of himself during and after time in prison from first person point-of-view. The novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers highlights the various perceptions that exist about an accused criminal.
Monsters are described as big, ugly, no-feelings creatures. They are also described as creatures of hell or creatures that are not acceptable in the society. This is disagreeable, not all monsters are ugly, and some monsters do have some feelings. The monster Grendel, in the book Grendel by the author John Gardner, shows that he is sensitive and has human's feeling traits even though he is a monster. Different events in the book, prove that the monster is impressionable and afraid.
Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them (Rowling & Yates, 2016) is a movie written by J.K. Rowling that follows the story of a wizard named Newt Scamander. Newt has a suitcase full of magical creatures that he cares for. He goes to New York to bring one
“The Beasts” The beast in the novel Grendel does not stray to far away from the monster in the book Frankenstein. These two creatures are both misunderstood which makes them do what they do, while they are just trying to fit in. The two monsters both handle rejecting and defeat very differently.
Breathing deeply, I retched at the sickening smell of rotten flesh and pus. Looking around, I caught a brief glimpse of the creature that was stalking me. Noticing my stare upon it, the creature melted into the shadows as if it was never there. This wretched labyrinth was starting to get to me.
For centuries stories have been told about monsters. Stories that include monsters themselves as the main character, and stories that include a battle between a heroic figure and the monster to represent good vs. evil. The root word for “monster” is “monstrum”, which means that which reveals or warns. A monster is the product or symbol of a culture from which the monster comes from. They are more than their physical body and entertainment value that plays into these stories of the monstrous figure we read about or watch in movies or television.
Manipulation to create power One powerful tool to gain power over an induvidual is minipulation. In goldings novel lord of the flies many characters are minipulated and power changes hand through many characters. The key character that creates power through manipulation is jack. The three ways he uses this manipulation is by violance , food and fear. One of the most powerful forms of manipulation that jack uses in the novel is fear.
Monsters are often classified based upon their appearance and inhumane characteristics. In the book Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein tears apart graveyards for the formation of a new being, which is brought to life with electricity. Frankenstein was fascinated with life itself and wanted to create this being through the dead with the use of science. After multiple years of suturing this new being together Victor succeeded in bringing this creature to life. Although realizing what he had just created Victor is repulsed by this new being and calls him a Monster.
The monster archetype has been one of the most riveting archetypes that surrounds the concept of ‘evil’. It has been portrayed as a supernatural creature with grotesque features that normally brings disruption to the city and needs to be tamed or controlled to bring once again peace to the story. Due to this, it is most commonly depicted with a negative connotation, and with the idea of horror and fear. The monster has been present since the bible, which was written approximately 3,400 years ago, with the anecdote of Goliath. It has remained with its primary role of converting the protagonist into a hero and providing fear to the storyline.
In the books Grendel by John Gardner, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and Animal Farm by George Orwell, Grendel, The Monster, and The Sheep are victims of their birth which they can’t help because they were born that way. They are forced to deal with obstacles that they can overcome or not. In Grendel, Grendel is known by his creation as a monster this is why he is unwanted by society. This is because he is also known for his “lineage” because of Cain.
