The subject of pride is portrayed in many ways throughout the story. An example of when pride is demonstrated is the pride of Doodles brother. His pride is shown in a selfish manner, as he sees only how events can affect him. A way in which Hurst achieves this is by showing the two different sides to pride. The side of pride the Hurst choices for the Brother to have is the more negative and selfish side of pride. Hurst chose to do this to show how pride has more than one meaning. He also decided to show the more negative side of pride to show that pride can motivate us to do things, even if they shouldn’t be done. Which is shown by the brothers treatment of Doodle, because even though he started out gentle and kind, pride eventually pushed him to become more strict. Hurst decided to also focus on the positive side of pride, the pride you wound feel for someone else. This side of pride is portrayed by Doodles Mama, Daddy, and Aunt Nicey.
