The thesis states,
Hurst uses indirect characterization to teach readers that selfishness can have positive and negative outcomes. Positive outcomes can come from selfishness
Brother teaches doodle to walk because he is embarrassed that doodle’s crippled. Hurst says, “that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.”
“ "What are you crying for?" asked Daddy, but I couldn't answer. They didn't know that I did it just for myself, that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother. ”(Hurst)

This quote from The Scarlet Ibis proves my topic sentence because since doodle will be able to walk, brother will no longer need to wheel him around everywhere making brother’s selfish actions beneficial to him. These two quotes support the statement that positive outcomes can be found in selfishness. Negative outcomes can come from selfishness
