Do you consider The Scarlet Letter to be a feminist novel? Yes, I do consider this novel to be a feminist novel because it represents the strength and the independence we take on as women. In the story Hawthorne shows how women where seen as inferior to men. Hawthorne shows how Hester had to stand alone against society. In the story Hester says “when god is ready there will be a new world better world for women we will be the same as men”. In my opinion this is basically a cry for feminism meaning that one day us women will be seen as equal to men and as strong as them instead of men being seen better than us because there are some women who can do the things men do and maybe even better. What is your definition of a “feminist”? A feminist is someone who strong willed in any situation they are in. In The Scarlet Letter Hawthorne explicitly exhibits a strong female character/feminist through Hester. In the beginning people would think Hester is weak, well she is actually a strong woman simply because of the things she did to not only protect herself but her family too. Knowing that keeping the baby and raising her on her own would be hard she still took on the challenge to do so.
